Automobile collisions happen every day, all around the world, but do you know what to do if you are involved in a collision? It’s something no one wants to think about, but if you do not follow the proper steps, it may end up costing you in the long run.
Seek medical attention
If you or the other party is injured, seek medical attention immediately. Your safety is paramount and if you think there has been any injury, call medical services.
Do NOT leave the scene of a collision
First and foremost, never, ever leave the scene of a collision. Leaving the scene of a crime where there has been significant damage or injury is a serious offense. Make sure nobody is injured or needs medical attention.
Call the police
Call the police and exchange insurance information with the other party. Give the police your full cooperation and document everything that has happened as quickly as possible.
Document the collision
Take pictures, a lot of pictures. Make sure you get photos of any damage to vehicles or property as well as any injuries that occurred. If there are any witnesses, get their contact information.
Save everything
After the wreck, save any and all documentation related to the incident. If you took your car to the shop keep any estimates or bills for repair work you had performed. If you went to the hospital keep any medical bills or medical insurance paper work.
Do not give any recorded statements to any insurance companies representing anyone else in the wreck.
If you have been involved in an automobile collision, you need a lawyer you can trust. Friedman Law Offices has been representing Nebraskans since 1962.
