Hernia Mesh - Complications Leading to Recalls (Part 2)

Friedman hernia Mesh.jpgIn our last blog, we discussed two brands of hernia mesh that have seen recalls over the last few years - Ethicon Physiomesh and Atrium's CQur VPatch Mesh. Let's take a look at two more that have been the focus of recent recalls.

Parietex

Unlike most of the other meshes we have mentioned Covidein's Parietex hernia mesh used polyester as the base material instead of polypropylene. The polyester mesh had similar complications as polypropylene meshes, but the polyester was soft and flimsy, making it much weaker than polypropylene.

The Parietex mesh used an unsealed edge, which exposed the ends of hundreds of polyester fibers. After implantation, these fiber ends become rigid and can perforate the bowel. The unsealed fiber edges have also been known to fray and unravel.

In addition to the unsealed fiber ends, the polyester in the mesh contracts and shrinks a significant amount. Since the polyester fibers are weaker than the titanium tacks or polypropylene sutures used to secure the mesh, the mesh is prone to tear.

Not surprisingly, the Parietex mesh was recalled after the product led to hernia recurrence and required additional surgical treatment to patients who received the mesh. Since its implementation, a total of 10 reports of the device failure have been reported. Patients who received this mesh should continue regular monitoring by their healthcare providers.

Bard

Bard has rolled out a number of hernia meshes. While they have created some of the most commonly used products for hernia repair surgery, they have created some products that weren't successful and harmed patients. Even the best NBA player cannot make 100 percent of their shots, and the same applies for successful companies. When a company creates a numerous successful products, there will be some failures too.

There are currently 17 recalled Bard meshes for reasons such as faulty packaging and faulty products causing patients to be harmed. Here are some of the recalled Bard products that we litigate here at Friedman Law Offices:

  • SpermaTex
  • Visilex
  • Composix E/X
  • Ventralex
  • 3DMax (Not 3DMax Light)
  • Sepramesh
  • Perfix Plugs

Whatever the reasons companies sell dangerous and/or defective medical products, it is the patient who pays the cost, through illness, disability, and even wrongful death.

Our lawyers are experienced with these types of claims, and we work with teams of medical experts, who pinpoint the causes of your illness and determine if a negligent medical device manufacturer contributed to or caused it. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have been affected by one of these devices - we are here to help.
