Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is approved for use as a treatment for low or no testosterone in adult males, including conditions such as hypogonadism and hypoandrogenism. It comes in various forms including gels, skin patches, mouth patches, shots and pills. Studies show that men who take testosterone therapy could seriously increase their chances of heart attack, stroke or other cardiac issues including death. While symptoms of testosterone deficiency can include fatigue, loss of libido, hot flashes, depression and sleep disturbance, drug manufacturers have marketed their products as lifestyle drugs. It is estimated that a quarter of the men prescribed TRT had never had their testosterone levels checked. Sales of TRTs well exceed $1 billion. There has been no recall or warning by the FDA on TRTs, however, the FDA announced on 1/31/14 that it would examine the safety of testosterone products applied via patch, gel, buccal system or injection.
