Family is awarded $90 million after teenage girl's tragic death

Losing a loved one unexpectedly can be terribly difficult. People in Lincoln and others living elsewhere may not know how to move forward with their lives. Their grief may be unimaginable.

When someone has died as a result of another party's negligence, families may decide to pursue legal action by filing a wrongful death lawsuit. They may ultimately be awarded compensation. That compensation cannot make up for the family's loss. However, it can alleviate financial difficulties that resulted from a tragic accident. In addition, it may also give family members peace of mind.

A family in another state was recently awarded $90 million. The family lost a 13-year-old girl in 2009 after she was hit by a car as she was trying to catch her bus to school.

The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school system where the girl went to school. They argued that officials did not provide her with "safe and adequate transportation." The girl's regular bus driver reportedly did not pick her up at the appropriate location, so she began taking another bus to school. To catch that bus, however, the girl had to cross the street.

The girl's mother described her as outgoing. She said the verdict does bring her a sense of closure. However, it does not change the events of the past.

This story shows that families in Nebraska and beyond can attempt to seek justice through a wrongful death lawsuit. After all, negligent parties should be held responsible for the harm and intense heartbreak that they have caused.
