PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPI)

Nexium, Prilosec, Dexilant, Prevacid, Protonix, AciPhex and Zegrid etc. are a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) that are widely prescribed to treat heartburn, acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in millions of Americans. Research published in JAMA in Jan. 2016 shows that those taking PPIs 1x daily had a 15% increased risk of chronic kidney disease and 2x daily users were 46% more likely to develop chronic kidney disease. The study also found that those who took PPIs had a 39% higher risk of kidney disease than patients that took H2 blockers, a different type of drug used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. In another study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the risk of end-stage renal disease was 96% higher in those who took PPIs.
